I work on LiDAR SLAM in environments where standard approaches fail, like tunnels or flat areas with a lack of geometry. In these repetitive spaces, a mobile scanner can lose track of its own position because the point cloud doesn't give it enough information to pin down where it is. My research has two parts. First, I use LiDAR reflectance images, based on how much light bounces back rather than shape, to help the scanner track its own position more reliably. Second, I work on global optimization, combining this data with other surveying tools, like total stations and static laser scanners, to produce one accurate 3D map of the whole site.

Short Bio
I’m Simone, born in 1998 in Brescia, Italy. In October 2023, I completed my master’s degree, and I’m now a PhD student in Telecommunications Engineering at the Department of Information Engineering, University of Brescia. My PhD research centers on computer vision applied to 3D sensing and mobile mapping, with a particular focus on LiDAR SLAM in geometrically degenerate environments. I’m interested in making mobile mapping systems reliable even where conventional methods fail, aiming for solutions that actually work in the field.
