In this PhD course, the essential relationship between humans and artificial intelligence, emphasising the importance of human involvement are explored. The course begins with a fundamental understanding of human-computer interaction, focusing on creating AI systems embedding the notion of users from the beginning. We then examine the explainability of AI tools, making the complex algorithms behind AI decisions more understandable for both specialists and non-specialists. Additionally, the course covers causality and argumentation, essential for mutual understanding and reasoning between humans and machines. We will also consider the design of conversational interfaces and prompting engineering, as key interaction modalities that enable users to deal with AI systems. This course aims to provide students with the abilities to design AI systems that are not only intelligent but also considerate of the human aspect.

Timeline and location: 12 hours, with first lecture likely to take place in the week starting with 23rd September 2024, in person at the University of Brescia, and remotely via synchronous videolink.
